Can quiet himself by sucking on his fingers or a pacifier

A Social & Emotional milestone for the week 5 age range.

TIP: Some children will take to finger sucking or pacifiers more than others. If you choose to use a pacifier, you should plan to stop using it by the end of the first year to facilitate healthy teeth and gums.

Our little boy is 6 weeks old and refuses to take a pacifier. He will fuss and cry until my husband or I offer him our finger, and then he will suckle like mad! How do we encourage him to use a pacifier or his own finger so that we can have our finger back?
